Adventures of a Handyman

Greetings.

I hope you are not too distracted by reading this handyman blog.

I started out operating a handyman service for a variety of reasons. One of the primary ones was to provide a service for those whos jobs were too small for most contractors, like installing air-conditioners, hanging doors, fixing a broken faucet, that sort of thing. Of course bigger jobs did come in, still too small for most contractors, but big enough to keep me busy for several days. One of which was this one where I was asked to

build a roof over a new entry to a basement. The stairwell and entrance door had already been built. There were drawings that gave the basic parameters of what the roof was to be, but materials and the final style needed to be decided.

Between the the client and myself we determined what the final look should be.

Many holes drilled into the brick and the concrete of the stairwell secured the framework that eventually lead to the construction you see below.

As you can see the poly carbonate roofing allows lots of natural light to illuminate the stairs. Personally I like the natural wood, but I do believe my clients intend to paint the wood in the spring. I am sure that too will look nice.

Again, I do smaller jobs than this. I have fixed several people's bathroom exhaust fans. A small job but necessary job.

On another occasion I was asked to power wash a client's shed. I had just purchased a power washer to remove an blast out an obstruction from my and my neighbor's eavestrough drain.

It turned out pretty well I think. I still have the power washer, so if you need your drains unclogged or something power washed, I now do that as well.

Another interesting job. Here we have an octagonal room that comes to a peak. The peak will house a ceiling fan and light. You can see the hard-wired junction box attached for power. The fan will be run by remote control. At the bottom you see the box for the smoke detector. That will be replaced with a lower profile box then hidden by the octagonal wood frame that will be laid on top.

Before that happens I have to insulate the area. I have just cut out the rigid Styrofoam insulation and will be gluing it to the surface. Then a layer of plaster, then the frame.

I will post some more pictures of this as they come in.

I have also replaced a dishwasher, installed several sets of shelves, repair improperly installed doors, put up drywall fire barriers, hung blinds, curtains and lights, none of which is quite as photogenic as these, but I will try to be a better photojournalist and capture more of my adventures as a handyman.
